Magnesium – which to choose

Magnesium is one of those supplements that almost everyone, sooner or later, end up taking. There are those who buy it for cramps, those for tiredness, who because they cannot sleep well, who because they feel nervous and tense, who because they have read that is good to the heart or to the bones. The problem is that, as soon as you enter the pharmacy or start looking online, you immediately notice one thing: there is no "magnesium", but there are many types of magnesium, and everyone seems to promise something different. This is where confusion arises. Many people buy the first that happens, try it for a few days, maybe they only notice a little intestinal discomfort and conclude that magnesium is useless. Actually, it is often not magnesium that does not work. It is the type of magnesium chosen that was not the right one.

First of all, we need to understand a simple concept. Magnesium is an essential mineral, not a "fashionable" substance. Our organism uses it in hundreds of biochemical reactions. He is involved in energy production, contraction and muscle relaxation, nervous transmission, pressure control, heart rhythm stability, bone health and even stress regulation. If magnesium is missing, the body does not go into crisis in a clamorous way from day to day, but slowly begins to lose efficiency. The result is often a set of disorders seemingly disconnected between them, such as cramps, insomnia, irritability, fatigue, palpitations, muscle tension, difficulty of recovery after an effort, and in some cases also intestinal disorders. Magnesium is not a magic wand, but when it is lacking it can become one of the most important factors to correct.

The reason why there are so many types of magnesium is technical but easy to understand. Magnesium alone cannot be taken as if it were a simple neutral powder. To be stable, digestible and absorbable must be linked to another substance. This substance can be an organic acid, amino acid or mineral salt. And this connection changes everything. It changes how much magnesium really comes into the blood, changes the speed with which it is absorbed, changes how much it is tolerated by the intestine and even changes the type of effect that is perceived. For this reason, two people can take "magnesium" and have completely different results.

One of the most known types is citrate magnesium. It is a very widespread form because it has a good compromise between absorption and cost. Citrate is often recommended to those who suffer from cramps, to those who do sports, to those who need general support. But it has an important feature: it tends to have a more evident effect on the intestine. In many people this is an advantage, because it helps those suffering from constipation or lazy bowel. In other people, instead, it can be a problem, because it can cause soft feces or diarrhea if the dose is too high. It is a valid form, but it should be dosed with intelligence, especially if the intestine is sensitive.

Another very appreciated form, especially in recent years, is bisglycinate magnesium, also called glycinate. This form is related to glycine, an amino acid that has a relaxing effect on the nervous system. That is why biglycinate is often preferred by those seeking help to sleep better, to manage stress, to calm the nervous and muscular tension, or to reduce that feeling of "inner alarm" that many people know well. It is also a form generally very well tolerated by the intestine, and for this is one of the best choices for those who do not want to risk gastrointestinal disorders. If I had to indicate a type of magnesium that goes well to a very high number of people, I would probably choose just this.

Then there is magnesium oxide, which is probably the most sold form in absolute because it costs little and is present in many products. We need to be clear here. Magnesium oxide has a low absorption. It does not mean that it is useless at all, but it means that it is often not the best form if the goal is to correct a real deficiency or get benefits on the nervous system, on sleep or on the muscles. Oxide is often used because it has a more marked laxative effect. In other words, it can serve if a person wants an intestinal effect, but it is not the ideal choice for those seeking a quality "nutritional" magnesium.

An interesting form, which many know less, is chloride magnesium. It is a very soluble form and, in some people, can be very effective. It is often chosen for general support, tiredness and cramps, and is sometimes associated with an improvement in digestion. However, being a rather "strong" form, it can disturb those suffering from gastritis or reflux. It is not a problem for everyone, but it is an important consideration.

Another type of magnesium that deserves attention is the sick magnesium. It is linked to malic acid, a substance involved in cellular energy processes. For this reason, sick magnesium is often recommended to those suffering from chronic fatigue, muscle fatigue, poor energy, or recovery difficulties. It is not rare that it is also proposed in contexts such as fibromyalgia, precisely because many people in that condition report an improvement of the feeling of energy and resistance. It is not said to be the best form for those who want to sleep better, but it can be a great choice for those who need to "rekindle" energy metabolism a bit.

There is also taurated magnesium, linked to taurine. This is a particularly interesting form for those with heart-related disorders and regulation of the autonomous nervous system. Many people suffering from palpitations, extrasistles or stress-related tachycardia refer benefits with this form, precisely because taurine is an amino acid that plays an important role in the electrical stability of cells. It is a less common form on the market, but often very useful for those who have a specific symptoms profile.

In recent years there has been a lot of talk about L-treonate magnesium. It is a form that is often associated with memory, concentration and brain function. The reason is that it is described as a form with greater ability to influence magnesium levels at the central nervous system level. It is an interesting form, but it should also be resized. It is often very expensive and, in terms of elemental magnesium, can provide lower amounts than other forms. It can make sense in people looking for a specific support for mental clarity, so-called brain fog or cognitive aging, but it is not necessarily the first choice for most people.

In Italy, pydolatrous magnesium is also widespread. It is a form often recommended by doctors, especially for stress, cramps and fatigue. It is generally well tolerated and has good absorption. In practice it can be a valid choice, although often bisglycinate offers similar benefits with a cheaper cost. In any case, the prying remains a serious and useful form.

There are also other forms, such as lactated magnesium, carbonate, orotate, sulphate. Some are more specific, others are used especially in particular contexts. Sulphate, for example, is known as English salt and is used more for relaxing baths or as a laxative. Orotato is a form often proposed for sportsmen and heart support, but tends to be very expensive. Lactate can be well tolerated, but is less widespread. Carbonate is often present in effervescent formulations.

A questo punto, la domanda più comune è sempre la stessa: qual è il magnesio migliore. La risposta più corretta è che dipende da ciò che si cerca. Se l’obiettivo è il rilassamento, l’ansia, lo stress, l’insonnia e la tensione nervosa, il bisglicinato è spesso la scelta migliore. Se l’obiettivo è la stitichezza o un supporto generale con un effetto anche intestinale, il citrato può essere più indicato. Se l’obiettivo è la stanchezza e l’energia, il malato può essere un’ottima scelta. Se l’obiettivo è il cuore, le palpitazioni e la stabilità del ritmo, il taurato può essere molto interessante. Se l’obiettivo è la memoria e la concentrazione, il treonato può essere preso in considerazione, soprattutto in un’ottica mirata.

Un’altra cosa importante è capire che il magnesio non funziona sempre come un analgesico, cioè non dà necessariamente un effetto immediato. In alcuni casi, come i crampi o la tensione muscolare, si possono notare miglioramenti in pochi giorni. In altri casi, come il sonno o la regolazione dello stress, il beneficio può essere più graduale. E poi c’è un aspetto che molti ignorano: non basta scegliere il tipo di magnesio, bisogna anche scegliere la dose giusta. Se la dose è troppo bassa, l’effetto può essere minimo. Se la dose è troppo alta, l’intestino può reagire. Il segreto è spesso iniziare con una dose moderata e aumentare gradualmente fino a trovare il punto in cui il corpo risponde bene senza effetti collaterali.

Infine, vale la pena sottolineare un concetto che considero fondamentale. Il magnesio non lavora nel vuoto. Lavora meglio quando l’organismo ha un equilibrio generale. Se una persona è in carenza di vitamina D, se mangia male, se dorme poco, se vive in stress cronico, il magnesio può aiutare ma non può risolvere tutto da solo. Eppure, quando viene scelto bene e inserito in una strategia più ampia, è uno degli integratori più utili in assoluto. Non perché prometta miracoli, ma perché sostiene funzioni essenziali, spesso trascurate.

In conclusione possiamo affermare che i tipi di magnesio esistono perché il magnesio, per essere davvero efficace, deve essere veicolato nel modo giusto. Alcune forme sono più adatte al sistema nervoso, altre all’intestino, altre all’energia, altre al cuore. Capire questa differenza significa smettere di prendere integratori a caso e iniziare a usare il magnesio in modo intelligente. E quando lo si fa, spesso ci si accorge che un piccolo cambiamento, come scegliere la forma giusta, può fare una differenza sorprendente nella qualità della vita quotidiana.
